My Story So Far
My story began in the tiny town of Audubon, Iowa. My father was a commercial artist of some renown in that area and artwork has always been a part of my life. I grew up in the Rockwell-esque hills of rural Iowa playing sports and entertaining study hall teachers with my goofy drawings. In stark contrast, we also lived 80 miles from the headquarters for the Strategic Air Command so we were always told to count on being the first to be evaporated in a nuclear attack. In the 60's I also found Mad Magazine and The Beatles ... so it was well worth the anxiety in the end. Hoping to avoid getting killed in the jungles of Viet Nam , I headed for college and within a few years I graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Advertising and Editorial Art.
My first ( and only ) actual job was in
Kansas City at Scheffer Studio learning the skills of architectural illustration. One day in late January of 1973 I made it to work through 3 feet of snow and ice to learn that my boss was transferring one person to the new branch office in Clearwater, Florida. Needless to say, I made sure I was the one heading south. I spent 4 years in that studio absorbing knowledge from several master illustrators. I applied the lessons from that work to my own drawing style and the client list that I was developing on my own. I eventually left the world of employment and I've been a freelance illustrator for over 30 years.
Early on my clients included professional
soccer teams from around the world, NFL football and MLB baseball teams, sporting events, radio & television stations, advertising agencies, some of the very first video game studios, various magazines and just about every other business imaginable. For the first 20 years of my artistic career I used the traditional tools of pens, brushes and paint, but in 1992 that changed dramatically. I bought my first Macintosh computer and never went back to the art supply store again... I love working on the computer!
Over the years my client list has grown and extends as far as the Internet reaches. These days I live with my beautiful and talented
wife Wendy in Tarpon Springs . All the kids have grown up and moved out of our house... life is great!
